I read a book recently, titled "My Sister's Keeper", by Jodi Picoult, even though the book was so long ago.
What does it really mean to exist in this world. Is it to have friends? Or family?
Success in life?
But how does it feel just to exist for someone, being alive just because your parents decided to use you as a walking and living substitute for your sister, donating blood everytime she requires dialysis? Even if your sister was your best friend, or your only friend.
In the story, Anna was born to save her elder sister, Kate, who was diagnosed with Leukemia, and her parents underwent in-vitro fertilisation to produce the perfect match as a donor to save Kate.
So, as the years went past, whenever Kate was hospitalised and needed dialysis, Anna would end up being hospitalised too, she could not have any friends over to her house, she could not stay over at her friends house, all because Kate had to be admitted to hospital anytime, and her parents needed Anna where they could send her to hospital to save Kate in the shortest time possible.
Thus Anna grew up very withdrawn and hostile to people around her, especially her family, who she actually loved despite of them bringing her to this world for a sole purpose- to save her sister.
One day, Anna decides to sue her parents for the right to her own body. It was revealed further on that Kate had told Anna she didnt want to live in a hospital anymore, she would rather give up her life. However, Anna's parents were expecting her to donate a kidney to Kate. Anna wanted to file a lawsuit against her parents, claming her own right to her body.
During the trial period, Anna was involved in a car accident, which made her brain dead. Since she was more or less dead, her kidney was automatically given to her sister, since they were both a perfect match.
After Anna's death, it shows Anna's parents grieving, and Kate remembers her sister through the scars of her many operations.
If we were in Anna's position, what would we do?
Would you leave your sister to die?
Or would you sacrifice yourself to save your sister.
Would you hate your parents your whole life for bringing you into a world of suffering in which you are neglected.
I am extremely lucky to be born into this world with no worries, a happy family and friends.
Thinking if I am in Anna's position, I would stay with her till the very end, and never hesitate to give up my kidney or anything for her.
Thats all,
OK BYE!
